1. An overview on IREC
IREC stands for International Renewable Energy Certificate (green energy certificate)
I-REC is a type of Energy Attribute Certificate (EAC) which is used to to certify a certain amount of electricity produced from a renewable energy source.
IREC allows businesses the electricity they produce and put on the grid is derived from renewable energy, providing environmental benefits and distinguishing it from other non-renewable energy sources.
2. How does IREC work?
The IREC Standard electronically issues I-RECs based on the output of a renewable energy generator.
1 Mwh = 1 IREC

- Solar power
- Wind power
- Hydro power
- Biomass power
- Biogas power
- Nuclear power
3. The status of renewable energy in Vietnam
I-REC is a clean energy source that helps to reduce greenhouse effect and does not cause pollution in the conversion process. Therefore, the Ministry of Industry and Trade sets targets and development orientations by 2030. According to research, with a total number of sunny hours up to 2,500 hours/year, it is a good condition for the solar energy system to strongly develop. The central and southern regions of Vietnam have implemented many solar projects that reap beneficial results to the government and the community.
In addition, Vietnam has a coastline of 3,200km and with an annual wind speed in the East Sea of 6m/s, so wind energy in Vietnam has great prospects. This is also an energy bringing a lot of benefits, but it needs accelerating in the future due to technical and legal problems.
